March: Tanja Poppelreuter - Shotengai
Photography exhibition in the weePLACE exhibition space.
During her time in Japan, architectural historian and photographer Tanja Poppelreuter discovered the Shotengai (商店街). These long, often inconveniently narrow and dark shopping streets are roofed, for pedestrians and bicycles only, and host a flabbergasting variety of shops.
Some of these shops specialise narrowly – in umbrellas, pickles, or tea towels and napkins. They have a hard-to-explain charm and are an intrinsic part of a tightly bound neighbourhood and lively street life. Tanja's photography uncovers the built and community fabric of the Shotengai.
