PLACE Academy is a free annual week-long event to introduce young people aged 14-18 to built environment professions, including architecture, urban design, town planning, and landscape architecture.
The Academy takes place over five days in early August, during which a team of experts facilitate discussion, investigation and design challenges to explore the host city.
The Academy aims to create a sense of excitement among its participants about the processes that shape their environments and to open up new pathways into creative careers for young people from all backgrounds.
Activities during the week of the Academy include design masterclasses, model-making, site visits, sketching, and opportunities to develop urban solutions. The final day of the academy involves a review of the work carried out by the students and a presentation to participants’ families and friends of the achievements of the week. All activities are led by our facilitators with support from our team of volunteers
PLACE Academy is a key component in our learning strategy and seeks to achieve two main aims. The first is to increase young people’s awareness of how their urban environments are created, shaped, and managed, both formally and informally. We believe that this understanding inspires active citizenship and that, in turn, creates more democratic, more inclusive, and safer places. Secondly, the Academy aims to carve out new routes for young people from all backgrounds to progress into built environment disciplines, diversifying and strengthening the sector in Northern Ireland.
PLACE Academy is an annual event, currently in its fourth year. We aim to select a new host location for each year, with previous Academies held in Belfast (2012), Bangor (2013), Craigavon (2014), and Derry~Londonderry (2015).
