Exhibition: Craigavon New Town: 50 Years of Modernity

24 October - 2 November 2014 / Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast

This exhibition, featuring new and archival photography by Victor Sloan alongside selected historical materials documenting the founding of Craigavon, told the often-strange story of the modernist city that rose out of the Northern Irish countryside. Drawings, plans and strategies for the Brownlow development linked with the work of Geoffrey Copcutt and modernist housing design such as Cumbernauld in Scotland and Thamesmead in London made infamous in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. The opposition of Sloan’s uneasy imagery of life in a new city with the idealist, utopian visual culture of 1960s town planning, told the story of a place in which quotidian normality is layered on top of the absurdity of the project’s unrealised ambition.

This exhibition was part of Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014. A series of events and exhibitions looking at the history of architecture with specific reference to the impact of modernity in Northern Ireland over the course of the past century. It was inspired by the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale directed by Rem Koolhaas, and the exhibition A Clockwork Jerusalem at the British Pavilion in Venice. It was developed by the Arts Council in Partnership with PLACE, Forum for Alternative Belfast, Belfast Exposed, QUB, QFT, University of Ulster, and the Ulster Museum.

48Hz: By Miguel Negrão

28 - 30 March 2014 / Platform Arts, Belfast

Event partners: PLACE, Sonic Arts Research Centre and Recomposing the City

48Hz was an immersive imaginary soundscape of Belfast. A multi-channel sound installation that used field recordings from X Marks the Spot by Matilde Meireles as the ground material for a drone composition.

The sound installation attempted to unveil and present to the listener the inner world hidden in the drone of the telecommunication boxes.

Each drone, with a fundamental frequency close to 48Hz, was unique and presented different sonic characteristics. For this installation Miguel selected two of the boxes as the single material for the composition: Sunnyside Street and Lockview Road.

The field recordings were analyzed in order to determine the key frequencies from each drone. By applying narrow band-pass filters it was possible to subtract the ambient noise and isolate the drone.

The 3-part composition progressed from a more “objective”perspective towards a more “subjective” one. Firstly it introduced the original recordings. Then, each individual frequency composing the drone was presented through a partially random selection and accumulation algorithm. Finally, the same material is played at different octaves with phase-shifted envelopes.

The installation generated a new version of the composition at each playback, creating a slightly different listening experience each time. The space was designed to invite the listeners to lie down on the floor and fully immerse themselves in the sonic experience.
